The buzzword in telephony circles has for some time been 'convergence', where computing and telephony resources become one and the same.
With the Asterisk Open Source PBX software, this convergence has become a reality, with telephony becoming another service to run on commodity x86 servers, in much the same way as one would handle a mail or web server.
